Katie Yu, regional vice-president of business financial services at the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), has earned a coveted spot in the Business in Vancouver (BIV) Forty Under 40 Awards.
With a career defined by bold decisions, people-centered leadership, and a dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), Yu embodies the qualities of an inventive and inspiring leader. Her path reflects personal achievement—as well as a commitment to empowering others.
Guiding with Vision and Empathy
Yu’s leadership style has evolved over the years. Initially, she led from the front, setting an example through her actions. But as her responsibilities expanded, so did her approach. “I strive to lead by curiosity, empowerment, and authenticity,” she explains. “My focus is on giving people the tools they need to focus on their most essential work and removing roadblocks within their control.”
This leadership philosophy has earned her gratitude from her teams. Reflecting on her proudest moments, Yu notes, “In every role I’ve held, I develop, grow, and stretch people despite experience levels, tenure, or background. Seeing team members grow is always a moment of pride.”
Taking Calculated Risks
Yu’s career trajectory includes making difficult decisions. A case in point was her move from HSBC Bank Canada to the Royal Bank of Canada in 2016. “Leaving HSBC was tough,” she recalls. “I grew up there as a fresh university graduate during the financial crisis. They supported my personal development—even enabling me to complete my MBA while working full-time.”
Despite the comfort and network she had built at HSBC, Yu took the leap. “Success to me is to lead a life that is thriving, fulfilling, and enriching on all fronts,” she insists. She balances her career with raising her young daughter and supporting her local community. Yu’s joys include cooking, gardening, and spending time outdoors.
As for what drives her vision for the future, Yu is proud of her support for DEI initiatives. One example is her leadership in establishing the “Mentorship Circle for Women in Business” at RBC, a program designed to foster connections, provide guidance, and create opportunities for women in the workplace. “With my recent appointment, it’s not lost on me that I now have a larger platform,” she admits. “I aim to inspire, encourage, and empower more youth, women, and visible minorities to show up to lead. Cultivating leaders of tomorrow is more important than ever.”
Lessons in Leadership
Yu’s leadership philosophy includes embracing calculated risks and rejecting perfectionism. “Don’t be afraid to make informed decisions and take risks. Perfection is the enemy of progress,” she advises.
Understanding fairness is another lesson that shapes Yu’s approach: “To be fair is not to be equal. This empowered me to be a more inclusive, versatile leader, appreciating everyone’s distinctive journey.”
Acknowledging Her Support System
Yu attributes much of her success to her mentors and supporters. She especially thanks her parents, who uprooted the family to move to Canada. Yu also describes her husband, Shawn, as her “best champion and supporter.” Finally, Yu credits her coach, Martin Thibodeau, for his approachable guidance.
Looking Ahead
Yu’s commitment to fostering leadership extends beyond her role at RBC. She is deeply invested in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives and DEI advocacy. As she looks to the future, Yu envisions continuing to use her platform to make a meaningful impact.
With a passion for helping others grow, Katie Yu’s journey shows the power of leadership grounded in empathy, vision, and authenticity. Her story is a reminder that great leaders do more than simply achieve—they inspire others to thrive.
