And for Elmore, that shift is not gradual. “People have to think this way. It’s not optional because the businesses that evolve are going to become impossible to compete against.”
AI literacy is not simply about staying relevant as an individual, but about remaining competitive inside systems that are evolving faster than traditional roles can adapt to them.

They worked their way through friction. “It took multiple takes, I’m not going to lie. To get the look, to get the right messaging… it took a lot to get it there.”
There is a tendency to treat AI output as something that improves with better instructions alone. What McGrath’s process shows is something closer to collaboration, where iteration is not a failure of the system but a requirement of working with it. “You could give it the perfect prompt, but it’s still going to come out with something all wrong… and you’re like, okay, I’m speaking to a computer.”
That realization recalibrates expectations. The system is capable, but it is not precise in the way traditional tools are. It produces directionally useful output that still demands interpretation, correction, and, at times, complete reworking.
As that understanding deepens, the role of the human operator begins to shift. “You have to be there. You can’t just let it go do your job for you. You have to make sure it’s accurate for your industry,” McGrath explains.
The responsibility becomes more continuous. Instead of executing tasks from start to finish, the human remains embedded throughout the process, shaping and refining as the system produces. This dynamic becomes even more apparent when results appear convincing but lack consistency. “It’s not like doing a math problem. You’re going to get what you get, and then you have to deal with it… and figure out how to change it,” McGrath says.
It’s a different kind of discipline for McGrath. Not one built on repetition, but one built on persistence. “There’s a lot of scrapping. A lot of staying strong and sticking with it until it’s exactly right… because it can get frustrating.”
This is where AI literacy moves beyond technical familiarity. It becomes a measure of how well someone can navigate uncertainty without losing direction. The people who adapt are not necessarily the most technical. They are the ones who are willing to stay in the loop long enough to shape the outcome.
From Using AI to “Engineering” AI
Organizations are now encouraging employees to move beyond the passive usage of AI and begin actively designing workflows powered by AI. Baptiste illustrates, “Engineering AI means really understanding AI and going past using AI to send emails. It means understanding terminology, hallucination, the science behind AI, that it is probabilistic.”
The inclusion of terms like “probabilistic” is not incidental. It signals a deeper shift in literacy. Without that foundation, outputs are accepted at face value, and verification becomes inconsistent. “If somebody does not understand the probabilistic nature of AI, then they will take everything that’s inputted as truth… they will not verify it,” explains Baptiste.
This is where risk quietly accumulates. Not because the system fails, but because the user lacks the framework to question it.
Inside Baptiste’s organization, the solution is not a single training session or guideline. It is a continuous process. “We run weekly boot camps where early adopters help others understand how to build agents, extract data, and assess outputs to make better decisions. What we’ve seen is conversion, more openness, demystification, and a shift in how people think about AI.”
The emphasis on demystification is key. Once the system is understood, it becomes less intimidating and more usable. From there, a different pattern begins to take hold. Baptiste emphasizes, “What will define an AI-native employee is lifelong learning. This is crucial because the systems change so quickly.”
In this context, AI literacy is an ongoing practice of staying aligned with a system that continues to evolve.
The Risk of Over-Reliance
Blind trust in AI outputs can lead to costly mistakes, especially in high-stakes environments, making critical thinking more important than ever. Carlos Dutra from Vindler says, “AI literacy is now about knowing when not to trust AI.”
Through their own work, Vindler has found that key skills associated with AI literacy have shifted from mere prompting to architecting AI agents that dynamically generate their own prompts, enabling complex, multi-system workflows. AI-literate professionals must master continuous learning to translate rapid technological advances into business value and understand agent architecture to ensure output reliability.
Dutra’s perspective develops from the inside of production environments, where AI is not a concept but an active component of daily work. “In the early days, we discussed whether it made sense to use AI. Now it’s the default. You ask why not use AI instead.”
That shift changes the starting point. AI is no longer introduced as an experiment. It is assumed, which raises the stakes for how it is implemented and evaluated. As usage expands, the structure of interaction evolves with it. “It moved from simply prompting to something that’s agentic; AI that is connected to your process and can make decisions,” Dutra illustrates.
The implication is subtle but significant. The user is no longer guiding each step directly, but defining conditions under which the system operates, often across multiple layers. This is where the skill set begins to change. Precision is no longer about wording alone. It is about structure, context, and how information flows through the system.
With that shift comes a different kind of responsibility. “The human is still accountable for what you deliver, particularly in software. It’s all about the quality of the work,” Dutra says.
Accountability does not scale down as automation increases. It becomes more concentrated. The distance between action and oversight grows, which makes validation more critical. Dutra continues,“If you skip validation, the impact can be huge, especially when multiple systems are interacting.”
To manage that risk, experienced teams introduce structure deliberately. Dutra explains, “You design validation steps like in a factory. You test what’s happening in the middle, not just the final output.”
That analogy is revealing. AI workflows are no longer linear tasks. They are systems that require checkpoints, feedback loops, and monitoring at multiple stages.
Over time, practitioners develop a more refined understanding of how to work within that system. “Good judgment comes from experience, understanding the limitations, opening the black box and seeing what’s going on inside.”
This is where AI literacy matures. It is not defined by how effectively someone uses a tool, but by how well they understand the conditions under which that tool produces reliable results.
